SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher felt Jaden Crowhurst was ‘excellent’ on his debut for the Shrimpers.

The 18-year-old – who came through the youth system at Roots Hall - played the full 90 minutes at Solihull Moors on Saturday.

And Maher was impressed with his performance.

“He was excellent,” said Maher.

“All the way though pre-season he did well and he’s a game lad.

“He’s fit and has been one of the fittest throughout pre-season.

“I’m delighted for him.

“It was a tough one and at times you worried he might cramp up but he got through it which is credit to him.

“He nearly scored too and he’s got that in his locker.

“He’s attack minded and he will push teams back.”

Crowhurst had been on the bench for the opening game of the season against Boreham Wood.

But he was promoted to the starting line-up following an injury to Harry Taylor.

“It’s another position where you look and we’re without Jason Demetriou, Gus Scott-Morris and Harry Taylor who played there last week so it’s fourth one but he did it on merit today,” added Maher.
