SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher was pleased with the spirit his side showed in their 0-0 draw at Halifax Town.

Blues dug deep after the break to secure a share of the spoils at the Shay.

And Maher was happy with the character on show.

“We’ve had two tough games away from home and to come away with points in both of them shows brilliant character,” said Maher.

“To keep a clean sheet here as well is brilliant.

“You can see they came on strong in the second half and we had to defend set-pieces which we did ever so well.

“But people put their heads and bodies on the line which was brilliant to see.

“Of course we wanted to be better on the ball second half, but it’s one of those games where it just wasn’t happening.

“We had to dig in the second half and you look at what finished the game and how young we were with Jack Wood, Oli Coker, Jaden Crowhurst and Louis Lomas out there, I’m delighted with everyone.

“The resilience shown in the dressing room is a good sign to have.”

But Blues continue to be hindered by a growing injury list.

“There are about eight players out that could all play a part and get in the team,” said Maher.

“We’ve got to get them back and get them on the pitch to help because the young lads did ever so well when they came on.

“Jaden [Crowhurst] did brilliantly again tonight, but it’s a tough ask to keep going Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday.

“They need a bit of help and the players on the pitch need a bit of help to freshen it up too.

“The calibre of player in the treatment room…we need them because when they’re fit and everyone is together I think we’ve got a very good squad.”

Despite the injuries, Blues have battled well and Maher was also boosted by his players after the game.

“Some in the changing room mentioned last year what happened here,” said Maher.

“We went under here last year.

“They didn’t do that today and that’s a great sign to have in the team.

“When we get bodies back we’ll be a strong team.”
