SOUTHEND United midfielder Cav Miley thought his side’s 0-0 draw at Halifax Town with a game of two contrasting halves.

Blues were on top during the first 45 minutes before the hosts had their own spell of pressure after the break.

And Miley was pleased with how the Shrimpers defended to avoid defeat.

“It was a tough night, especially the second half,” said Miley.

“I thought it was a game of two halves but we defended well in the second half.

“The amount of corners and set pieces, balls into the box the lads, especially at the back and Arnie (Steve Arnold) were brilliant.

“Going in at half-time we felt like we were on top but it was a tough night.”

Blues wasted a huge chance to break the deadlock in the first half with Callum Powell having a penalty saved by Oldham goalkeeper Sam Johnson.

But Miley wants the Shrimpers to create more chances from open play.

“It’s football and it happens,” said Miley on the missed penalty.

“People miss pens but we have to create more chances within the game.

“In the first half I felt we were the better team so we have to make sure we put them to bed early doors.

“But a point isn’t a bad result and we’ll look back at the end of the season and think a point here isn’t bad.”

The Shrimpers will now start to prepare for Saturday’s match with Oldham Athletic at Roots Hall.

And Miley is determined to ensure Kevin Maher’s side pick up their first win of the campaign.

“We’ll get back into training for Saturday now and make sure we win,” said Miley.

“We will do everything we can do to do that.”
