DAN Mooney was left ‘buzzing’ after firing Southend United to their first win of the season on Saturday.

Summer signing Mooney bagged the only goal of the game as Blues beat Oldham Athletic 1-0 at Roots Hall.

And the 23-year-old was thrilled with his afternoon’s work.

“I’m buzzing really,” said Mooney.

“It’s been four games but it’s nice to get on the score-sheet and get going for the season.

“The lads did brilliantly to get the ball to me in that position and you’ve got to finish it off to make it look even better which is exactly what I did.”

Blues started the season with a 1-0 defeat against Boreham Wood at Roots Hall before drawing at both Solihull Moors and Halifax Town.

But Mooney felt the first victory was thoroughly deserved.

“We created chances in the game and I could feel it was coming with the crowd right behind us,” said Mooney.

“They help a lot and it was good.

“It could have been 3-0 or 4-0 but we’re creating the chances and that’s positive “We have to keep going now though and get more points on the board.”

Blues are now 13th in the early National League standings but Mooney is keen to ensure Kevin Maher’s side continue to progress as he works his way back to full fitness following a foot injury.

“It’s getting used to the minutes and staying on top of it,” explained Mooney.

“We will build the minutes up and then hopefully I can stay on the pitch longer and create more chances and score more goals.

“But it’s been a good day.”
