GUS Scott-Morriss enjoyed a full debut to remember as Southend United saw off Maidenhead United at Roots Hall on Monday.

Scott-Morriss, who suffered a hamstring injury shortly after signing in the summer, headed home Blues’ first goal in the 2-0 victory.

And the defender was beaming with delight at the final whistle.

“I’m buzzing,” said Scott-Morriss.

“I’ve waited a long time for it and it’s not been the perfect start for me in my Southend career getting injured early on in pre-season but that’s what dreams are made of having a debut like that so I’m buzzing.”

Scott-Morriss came off the bench late on against Eastleigh on Saturday before being brought into the starting line-up 48 hours later.

And the defender made an immediate impression as he headed home a right wing corner from Dan Mooney.

“I do back myself in the air and I always went up for set pieces at my old club,” said Scott-Morriss.

“They know that down here so I went in and attacked the ball.

“Mooney put it on the spot and I put it into the net.”

Callum Powell added a second goal to see victory for the Shrimpers as Kevin Maher’s side bounced back from Saturday’s setback.

“It was a low blow,” said Scott-Morriss.

“We weren’t that bad and a freak goal went against us.

“But it was massive for us to come here and show what we’re about.

“We wanted to bounce back and get that winning momentum because we feel like we’ve got something going here.”

Scott-Morriss is also keen to help show that having now recovered from the hamstring injury he suffered during pre-season.

“It was a shock to the system going into full-time football,” said the defender.

“It was unlucky and it was my first real muscle injury playing football.

“It’s been tough sitting in the gym watching the boys going out training.

“The lack of minutes has been tough and today after about 65 minutes my legs went.

“The bench knew it but I was glad to get through it and do what I could for the team.

“It's being thrown in the deep end a bit.

“In an ideal world you have a pre-season, you get your 90 minutes and get going.

“It’s sink or swim really and hopefully you’ll do alright.”

And Scott-Morriss remains determined to make the most of the opportunity.

“This is all I ever wanted to do,” said Scott-Morriss.

“I thought my chance was going to go. Being here in front of 5,000 to 6,000 is what I’ve always wanted so I’m absolutely buzzing.”
