SOUTHEND United midfielder Wes Fonguck felt the Shrimpers did not deserve to end up empty handed against Torquay on Saturday.

Blues were beaten 2-1 by the Gulls following a frustrating afternoon at Roots Hall.

And Fonguck was certain the final scoreline was not a fair reflection of the game.

“Everyone who watched this game knows we should have taken three points,” said Fonguck.

“Even if we drew we would’ve been disappointed so to lose makes it even worse.

“We kept pushing right until the end but unfortunately we couldn’t get the win.”

The Shrimpers went behind early on when Ryan Hanson headed the visitors in front.

And that enabled Gary Johnson’s side to pack men behind the ball in a bid to protect their lead.

“Once they got their goal they sat in and we tried to break them down,” said Fonguck.

“It was difficult with a lot of shots being blocked but we were on top throughout the game I thought.

“We let in a sloppy goal but from that point we dominated and we should have won so we’re disappointed as a team.”

Will Goodwin extended Torquay’s lead just past the hour mark before Blues hit back late on with Chris Wreh heading home following a prolonged period of pressure.

But the Shrimpers were unable to find an equaliser and now head to Barnet, Fonguck’s former club, looking to get back to winning ways.

“Barnet have got off to a good start but we’ll approach the game the same way we do every game and hopefully get the win,” said the midfielder who made 139 appearances for the Bees.

“It will just be another game really and I don’t look too much into it.

“It was good at Barnet though.

“I joined when I was 17 and left when I was 24 so I had a lot of years there and met a lot of good people which was nice but I’m with Southend now.”

Despite Saturday’s defeat, the Shrimpers moved up to 13th in the National League standings.
