LEE Barnard bagged a brace and strike partner James Walker also scored as Southend beat Crewe 3-1.

But the real hero was goalkeeper Darryl Flahavan, who blocked two penalties to ensure the visitors picked up another three points.

Barnard put the Shrimpers ahead in the second minute with a right-footed strike from 12 yards.

Walker doubled the advantage in the 19th minute when he picked up Alan McCormack's pass from the right and drilled home a left-footed shot from 12 yards.

Crewe had a chance to reduce the arrears in the 33rd minute when Peter Clarke fouled Nicky Maynard in the 18-yard box.

Gary Roberts opted for power for his penalty kick but Flahavan parried the spot-kick.

Joe Anyinsah won another penalty for the Railwaymen in the 72nd minute after he was fouled by Simon Francis.

This time Kenny Lunt tried his luck from 12 yards but he, too, was denied by Flahavan, who parried his right-footed effort.

But two minutes later Crewe pulled a goal back after McCormack fouled Lunt. The victim took the resulting free-kick and Maynard headed home to make it 2-1.

However, Barnard made the points safe 10 minutes from time when he superbly controlled a through ball from Walker and slotted home with his left foot.
