SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher feels things will soon start to turn for the Shrimpers.

Maher takes his Blues side to Wealdstone this weekend.

And he heads into the game boosted by the performance in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Wrexham.

“We got a response on Saturday against a team who will be at the top end of the table,” said Maher.

“Anyone who finishes above Wrexham will probably be promoted but we went toe to toe with them.

“If anything they were the ones hanging on at the end.

“It shows what we can do and there have been a lot of games this season that have been similar to that.

“We’ve wanted a few more points and we should’ve had a few.

“But I know we’ve got a good group there and we look to build again.

“Something has got to turn for us – one or two decisions going our way or a bit of luck.

“The harder we work hopefully the luckier we get and that’s the way we keep on working.”

Blues head into Saturday’s match sitting 17th in the National League standings.

But Maher feels the Shrimpers have shown what they can do.

“There hasn’t been a game this season where we haven’t performed at some stage of it,” said Maher.

“We’ve had a couple of halves we haven’t hit the heights but we’ve spoken to the players about being us, what we’re all about and getting back to that.

“I think we did that on Saturday and the disappointing thing was it wasn’t backed up by three points.”

Blues are now turning their attentions to this weekend’s match with Wealdstone who currently sit sixth in the standings.

And Maher has been impressed by their opening few fixtures.

“Wealdstone have started ever so well,” said Maher.

“They’ve got themselves up there early in the season and it’s a tough game that we have to take all the good stuff we’ve done into.

“We played them at the back end of last season and ended up losing a game we felt we should have taken something from.

“They will try and play an open and expansive game.

“It’s good football and they’ve got some good results.

“They have some dangerous players we need to be wary of but I’m sure they will be wary of us too and it makes for a good match.

“It’s one we will go into with good confidence too.”
