SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher felt the officials were spot on in awarding his side’s match winning penalty at Wealdstone.

Marcus Dackers’ second half spot-kick secured the Shrimpers all three points.

And Maher felt it was the correct decision after Gus Scott-Morriss’ right wing cross struck the arm of Olufela Olomola.

“It was 100 per cent a penalty but they will think otherwise of course,” said Maher.

“We’ve had a decision go against us last week but the linesman was in the perfect position to see it.

“He was brave enough to give it but it’s swings and roundabouts.

“We spoke about earning our luck at times and a decision has gone our way, rightfully so, but it’s still got to be given.”

Dackers’ penalty saw the Shrimpers end a three match winless streak, despite having right wing-back Gus Scott-Morriss sent off 19 minutes from time.

And Maher was thrilled to pick up all three points.

“We spoke about playing winning football,” said Maher.

“It’s a learning curve for us because you can play well and not win but I don’t want that, I want both.

“I want to be greedy but sometimes you’ve just got to win and I’m delighted for the players.

“The effort they put in was very good and so was another clean sheet.”

The victory delighted the large travelling contingent of Shrimpers supporters.

And Maher felt the fans also played a big part in the win.

“Our fans were incredible behind the goal,” said Maher.

“It was like we had an 11th man with them there.

“There’s been some news this week which isn’t nice and has affected one or two people.

“But that’s the belief I’ve got in the club and the fans.

“What we have as a club gives us a chance. “
