ON-LOAN Southend United striker Marcus Dackers wants his match-winning penalty at Wealdstone to be a springboard for the Shrimpers’ season.

Dackers - who is with Blues from Salford City - fired home the only goal of the game to send Kevin Maher’s side up to 14th in the National League standings.

But Dackers now wants the victory - which came despite Gus Scott-Morriss being sent off in the second half - to be the start of a winning run.

“Where we are in the table doesn’t reflect how we’ve been playing recently and hopefully this is a springboard for us to climb up the table,” said Dackers “It was a big win for us and the boys really dug deep after going down to 10 men.

“Wealdstone were in sixth place before the game so to come here and get the three points, it doesn’t get much better than that.”

Dackers also proved to be the difference between the two teams as he confidently fired home a penalty midway through the second half.

And the 19-year-old enjoys taking on the responsibility from the spot.

“That’s my fourth or fifth penalty in senior football and I’ve not missed one yet,” said Dackers.

“My technique is a bit different and I only take two steps back but it’s worked every time.

“I just try to block out all the noise that’s going on and just focus on me and the ball, making sure I strike it well.”

Dackers now has two goals in three games for the Shrimpers and was pleased his latest effort resulted in his first win since signing.

“It wasn’t our prettiest performance and we know we can play better football but getting three points is the main thing, especially with 10 men,” said Dackers.

“You have to keep fighting and you can’t let your heads drop so we’re all very happy with the three points.”

Dackers also got through plenty of defensive work late on to ensure Blues came out on top.

And the teenager said it was the large travelling support which kept him going.

“The fans are unbelievable and the adrenaline they give you kept me going in that last 20 minutes,” said Dackers.

“I ended up at centre-back and hearing them shouting makes you want to do it for them.

“The support was unbelievable and I hope they enjoyed the game. “
