JASON Demetriou believes Southend United’s belief is starting to build.

The defender looks set to replace the suspended Gus Scott-Morriss in the starting line-up for Saturday’s clash with Yeovil Town at Roots Hall.

And Demetriou is keen to help Blues build on Saturday’s 1-0 win at Wealdstone.

“It was massive to get the win at the weekend, off the back of a good result against Wrexham,” said Demetriou.

“It gives us momentum and the belief just builds even more.

“We’ll take that into Saturday but every team in this league is tough and there is no easy win.

“We’ll have to make sure everyone is up for it and the most important thing is the three points.

“Two wins and a draw from the last three would see us climbing slowly towards where we want to be.”

Right now, the Shrimpers sit 14th in the National League standings.

But Demetriou has been pleased with the performances.

“I’ve been quite impressed,” said the 34-year-old.

“Some of the results haven’t gone the way we want but the foundations are there and you can see it from afar.

“Some of the performances have been really good, it’s just that one or two goals we’ve lacked to get the wins we’ve deserved.”

Blues will be hoping to make it back to back wins for the first time since this season when Yeovil visit Roots Hall on Saturday.

But Demetriou is taking nothing for granted against the 19th placed Glovers.

“Every team is league is tough, there is no easy win,” said the defender.

“We’ll have to make sure everyone is up for it and the most important thing is the three points.

“Two wins and a draw from the last three would see us climbing slowly towards where we want to be.

“But it’s mad at the moment because if you get a couple of wins and you’re at the top and a couple of defeats you’re in the middle because of how close it is.”

Blues have yet to find a level of consistency during a season which has seen Demetriou unable to hold down a regular starting slot.

But the defender fully understands his role in the squad this season and is pleased to see summer signing Scott-Morriss doing well.

“As you get a bit older you come to half accept it a little bit and you know your role in the team,” said Demetriou.

“Everyone wants to play but I have to say I’ve really enjoyed watching Gus.

“He’s been very good and I think he’s got a bit of everything.

“It amazes me sometimes how someone like him could be in the lower leagues for so long.

“He’s a good kid too and anything I can do to help I’ll do it all day long.

“It’s a good group we’ve got here and he’s one that stood out.”

But, with Scott-Morriss serving a one match ban on Saturday, Demetriou is keen to make the most of the chance which seems likely to come his way.

“As you get a bit older you’ve got to make sure you do your job for the team and don’t let anyone down,” said Demetriou.

“It keeps the competition high and I’ll definitely be looking to help the lads as much as I can.”

And, longer term, Demetriou is hoping for a good season for the Shrimpers.

“I’ve been very impressed when you see the way the gaffer works and his staff,” said Demetriou.

“We’ve recruited really well too.

“I don’t want to say anything too much because I’ve said it before but I’m quietly excited about this group and the staff.

“Hopefully come the end of the season we will be where we need to be.”
