SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher praised his side’s mentality following this afternoon’s 2-0 win against Dorking Wanderers.

Blues recorded a comfortable three points at Roots Hall four days after drawing with table-topping Notts County.

And Maher was happy to see the Shrimpers fighting hard for a second time in quick succession.

“We spoke about having to follow up Tuesday’s incredible effort against Notts County and trying to reach the same levels again,” said Maher.

“For me it was about the mentality of the team today and having to go again.”

Blues scored twice in the first half with Jack Bridge and Shaun Hobson both on target.

But Maher felt the Shrimpers could have scored more.

“We wanted a few more to put it to bed because 2-0 gave them something to chase,” said the Blues boss.

“At the end of the first half we had one blocked on the line and if we took care of the ball a fraction better in the final third we would have got another or two.

“But if you offered me 2-0 before the game I’d take that all day long.”

Blues are now up to fifth in the table but Maher is keen to keep moving in the right direction.

“We’re ticking along,” said Maher.

“We want to keep picking up points and keep moving forward.

“It’s another clean sheet and another two goals.

“The desire is incredible from the players."

And Maher is also rightfully proud of the progress being made.

"You can’t put it into words really," said the 46-year-old.

"The people around here do an unbelievable job and we do what we do for everyone at the club.

"That’s what drives me and it drives the staff too.

"There’s a bond between the players, staff and fans which is brilliant to see."
