FORMER England boss Peter Taylor wants Gareth Southgate to shuffle his pack for Tuesday night's World Cup clash with Wales.

The Three Lions top Group B in Qatar having taken four points from their first two games.

But the Thorpe Bay based Taylor would like see Southgate making full use of his attacking options after he previously opted to select the same starting line-up in both matches.

"Maybe because of beating Iran Gareth kept with the same group and I can understand that," said Taylor.

"But they have a 26 man squad at these tournaments now so it would be wrong to use 13 or 14 of them.

"They’re all good players, that’s where they’re there and if they had a practise match between A and B it would be very close so you can rest some players.

"I would’ve rested Harry Kane for the second game because I didn’t think he was 100 per cent right and I'd like to see Phil Foden and Jack Grealish start against Wales."

England drew 0-0 with USA on Friday having beaten Iran 6-2 in their opening fixture.

And Taylor feels Manchester City star Grealish would help improve the Three Lions in the final third.

"Grealish is a bit different and he’s more one to take people on but I think he asks a question every time," said the former Southend United boss.

"He gets a lot of fouls and threatens the oppositions every time he gets the ball.

"If Harry still isn't right then you have to stick Callum Wilson in there too."

But Taylor - who had two three year spells as England under 21 manager - does expect Southgate's side to win tomorrow night.

"I think we will be too strong for Wales and I was a little bit disappointed with them in their second game against Iran," said Taylor, 69.

"They weren’t anywhere near what they should have been."

England will be hoping that is the case again on Tuesday and Taylor is now starting to enjoy the matches having initially not been too excited about the tournament getting underway.

“I wasn’t looking forward to it as much as I normally am because of the time of the year and everyone having to stop their leagues,” said Taylor.

“Somebody getting injured in the season would normally have time to recover but now someone could pull a thigh muscle and be out of the World Cup and would then have to wait another four years.

“I haven’t got into it as much as I normally would but the games are getting interesting now and it’s also nice to see some of the upsets.

“It doesn’t surprise me though because countries are getting better and they believe a bit more too.”

USA come into that category after making life hard for England.

But Taylor feels the Three Lions are well placed to push on.

“In the first game we created some early chances and took them straight away,” said Taylor.

“That killed off Iran but we didn’t get that number of chances against USA.

“They were very fit and very organised and hard to play.

“But Morocco beat Belgium and these results happen.

“If somebody said to me you could have four points after two games I’d have said yes please.

“The result against USA was probably fair and four points from two games means we’re in a good position.”

Taylor – who took charge of England’s senior side for their match with Italy back in 2000 – will be keeping a close eye on this evening’s encounter.

But his own work now sees him scouting.

“I’m doing a little bit of scouting for Northampton,” said Taylor.

“I was doing scouting for Southend but at lower levels and seeing if there were any good youngsters out there.

“But then all of a sudden Northampton asked me to do some scouting for them and it’s more looking at first team players who are ready now.

“I’m watching more league matches than non-league matches.”
