FORMER Southend United star Freddy Eastwood will be ‘sitting on the fence’ when England take on Wales in the World Cup.

Eastwood scored four goals in 11 games for Wales but has lived in England all his life.

And the ex Shrimpers striker is therefore not sure who to support on Tuesday evening.

“If it wasn’t against Wales I’d definitely be cheering for England but I think I’m going to have to sit on the fence for this one and be neutral,” said Eastwood.

“I’ve obviously always lived in England but the country I played for was Wales and I played with quite a few of the boys who are still playing.

“I want them to do well and it’s a shame that it’s come down to them both needing something from this game because I want them both to go through.”

Eastwood qualified to play for Wales through his grandad.

And he has happy memories of his international career.

“It was different to league football,” said the 39-year-old.

“You’re playing against some superstars which was exciting and you got to play alongside some too.

“Gareth Bale burst onto the scene when I was playing so did Aaron Ramsey and I played up front with Craig Bellamy so there were some brilliant players.

“We had some really good times and it’s great to see Wales at the World Cup.”

Eastwood has enjoyed tracking the action from Qatar but feels both England and Wales have been inconsistent so far.

“England were really good in the first game but poor in the second but that was obviously against a much better team,” said Eastwood.

“I thought Wales were poor in the first half of the first game but really good in the second.

“After that, I thought they were going to easily beat Iran but it wasn’t to be.

“Overall, I think it’s been brilliant to watch and there have been a few shocks along the way too.”

Closer to home, Eastwood continues to keep tabs on Blues and he is happy to see his former team-mate Kevin Maher doing a good job as head coach.

“I’m pleased Kev has turned it round and they’re doing really well,” said Eastwood.

“It would be nice if we could get promoted this season and my dad still goes to a lot of the games.

“I’ve been busy with work but I should make more time to go down as well.”
