SOUTHEND United striker Callum Powell is keen to get back among the goals for Blues.

And the forward is confident his improving fitness will allow that to happen.

Powell returned to the Shrimpers’ starting line-up at Bromley on Monday after recovering from a knee injury he sustained against Gateshead in November.

But he knows there is a lot more to come.

“Against Bromley I felt good physically and didn’t feel tired at all but sometimes it’s about that game sharpness,” said Powell.

“You need to get in the right positions and get your shooting boots back on really.

"As soon as you get that chance and find the back of the net it puts you back on a good run and takes pressure off the team.

“We’ll always be the people the team looks to to score because as strikers that’s our job.

"But I’m confident we’ve got a lot of goals within this team and hopefully we’ll show that soon.”

Powell remains top scorer for Blues this season having hit the back of the net seven times.

And he believes Kevin Maher’s side have already shown what they are capable of doing so far this season.

“If you look at where we’ve come from and what we’ve done we’ve had such a good unbeaten run where we were beating sides 2-0 and 3-0,” said Powell.

“We were scoring more freely and that’s something we want to get back to and I’m sure we will achieve again.

“I’ve been out for a little bit of time with injury and Cards (Harry Cardwell) has as well.

“We’ve got a few more strikers coming back in with Murph (Rhys Murphy) and Hydey (Jake Hyde) on the mend too.

"Chrissy (Wreh) has contributed with a few goals as well but I reckon for myself it’s about getting that first goal back from injury.

"As soon as you get one hopefully they will start to flow.”

Powell missed two matches for the Shrimpers through injury before making two appearances from the bench.

However, the 26-year-old returned to the starting line-up at Bromley and was pleased to secure a share of the spoils.

“Bromley is a difficult place to go and we’ve come away with another point which is good,” said Powell.

“But it was disappointing not to win the game as we felt like we were the better side.

"We tried to do everything the right way and pressed from the front.

"We had a lot of possession and it was just creating those clear cut chances and an all important goal which would have allowed them to come out of their low block a bit more.

"I think that would have made it more of an entertaining game for the neutral too.

“But it’s another point on the road and we’ll take that into a good game at home against Solihull now.”

The Shrimpers will head into the game sitting sixth in the standings. But Powell is expecting another tricky contest this weekend.

“We played them at their place early on in the season and they’re a great team,” said Powell.

“They did really well last season and were unlucky not to win the play-offs.

"We know what we will get from them and it will be another tough game.

"But we’ll make sure we’re focused and prepare right like we always do to try and get the three points.”
