HARRY Cardwell’s late winner against Darlington was the first time Southend United have scored in stoppage time this season.

Not since James Dunne netted at Barnet in April had Blues netted beyond the 90 minute.

And Shrimpers boss Kevin Maher was pleased to see his side score late on in Saturday’s FA Trophy tie and believes it will help Blues moving forward.

“There’s been plenty of games when we’ve been knocking on the door and not been able to get that winner or equaliser,” said Maher.

“You thought it might be one of those games again with us getting chance after chance.

“But it’s a good marker to get over the line with that.

“I felt a bit like the Torquay game we had but we’ve overcome it late on which is pleasing.

“It’s a good sign moving forward too."

Prior to Cardwell's goal at the weekend, Blues' latest effort of the season had been Chris Wreh's 86th minute header against Torquay United.
