A SOUTHEND United supporter group wants fellow fans to boycott Saturday’s FA Trophy clash with York City.

The Southend Fan Updates group have held pre-match protests against Ron Martin’s running of the club ahead of the Shrimpers last two home games.

And their next plan is to urge supporters to stay away from Roots Hall this weekend.

A statement from the group said: “As this is a cup game and therefore season tickets will not apply, we believe that this is our best chance at getting a noticeable, coordinated boycott going.

“We humbly ask that supporters do not attend this game.

“We need to show that we as supporters are the lifeblood of this club and its only hope at staying afloat.

“This is a golden opportunity to visit one of the many local non-league sides instead and generate some much needed income for them as well.

“If we're serious about getting Martin Out, we need to show that it's ultimately us who make this a viable endeavour for him.

“Without us, he'd have no choice but to go. “

Some staff at Roots Hall have not been paid since November while players and management are still waiting for their January wages.

The club also remains in a transfer embargo due to an HMRC winding up petition which will see the Shrimpers back in court at the start of March.

But the group know some supporters will still want to attend Saturday’s game.

They added: “We realise this is a big ask.

"But for the sake of one 90 minute game of football against the backdrop of not having a club anymore, please do not attend this fixture and boycott.”
