SOUTHEND United host York City at Roots Hall for the second Saturday in succession tomorrow.

Last weekend, the Shrimpers saw off the Minstermen 2-0 in National League thanks to a second half brace from Jack Bridge.

But the two teams will battle it out in the last 16 of the FA Trophy this weekend and boss Kevin Maher is keen to make it another step closer to a Wembley final.

"All the clubs left in will be thinking they have a chance but we're just looking at Saturday and it's another game for us to overcome," said Maher.

"We played them a week ago so both teams know each other well and they will be no surprises but we don't look too far ahead in the competition.

"It's a tough one and we have to perform but we're at home and with the crowd behind us hopefully we can make it difficult for them.

"We'll look to play at our tempo and see where it takes us."

York have parted company with manager David Webb since Saturday's setback and will have his assistant Michael Morton in charge this weekend.

But Maher is only focusing on the Shrimpers' preparation.

"I don't know (how it will affect them) because I can't really comment on other teams," said the Blues boss.

"For us we've got to remain focused on the game and be ready for whatever comes.

"We will have to be ready and if we do what we can do well we can be a match for any team."

However, Blues are currently in the middle of a busy period of fixtures.

And Maher will carefully consider his starting line-up.

"It's about managing the balance of freshening things up but not changing too much," said Maher.

"It's about momentum and consistency but it's hard without knowing the distances players run to know who might need resting.

"We gauge it on what we see in training and in games but those games are coming thick and fast."

The Shrimpers triumphed 2-1 at Maidenhead United on Tuesday night to move sixth in the National League.

And Maher again heaped praise on his players who continue to perform well despite still waiting for their January wages.

"The players deserve all the credit because they're the ones going out there," said Maher.

"They're the ones who have to perform but it's a team effort and that includes all the staff here too.

"I thought we deserved the win on Tuesday and the players showed great character to keep on going and get it."
