ECHOSPORT talks to York City fan and journalist Ryan Brookes ahead of Saturday's FA Trophy tie at Southend United.

What have fans made of the decision to part company with David Webb since your last visit to Roots Hall?

“Over the last few months, one thing that has happened for certain is that York City fans have been united.

"No one took the Askey sacking lightly, and almost all supporters backed the decision to relieve Webb of his duties.

“While at the helm in his first ever managerial role, Webb has claimed just one league win, and now leaves the club on a five game losing run - that sums his time up really.

“I think it was the correct choice, and the job was just a step too far and too early for the 42-year-old.”

Who will be in charge of the team this weekend and do you think there will be many changes?

“Michael Morton, the man who acted as Webb’s assistant during his short stint in North Yorkshire, has been placed in interim charge for the FA Trophy game at the weekend.

“He will be assisted by injured Scott Barrow, sports scientist/midfielder Paddy McLaughlin and goalkeeping coach Joe Stead.

“Morton is a York fan and grew up here, so it means a lot to him.

"He oversaw the first two games while Webb fell ill and won both, the team scoring seven goals across them.”

Who has been linked with the job so far?

“There’s a clear bookies’ favourite and that is ex-manager John Askey, who won promotion to the National League last season, and was unfairly dismissed back in November.

"He is odds-on at the time of writing, and I think many City fans would very much support the reinstatement and welcome him with open arms.

“Former player Russ Penn is also up there, as well as Altrincham’s Phil Parkinson and recently sacked Forest Green boss Ian Burchnall, however you really can’t speculate too much yet.”

How important is the Trophy to the club?

“There’s absolutely no doubt that the league and avoiding the drop is number one priority, but who wouldn’t love a day out at Wembley? I for one certainly would!

“City have won the FA Trophy on two previous occasions, both under Gary Mills, most recently in 2017.

"They also won the competition in 2012, during that famous ‘Wembley Twice (in a week) victory’.

“The Minstermen came so close last term, defeating Dagenham, but falling just short against Bromley in the semi-final.

"It would mean so much to this club if they could take that step closer.”
