SOUTHEND United’s players have now been paid their January salaries, Echosport understands.

The pay packets had been due at the end of the previous month but have now been received 28 days later.

The Shrimpers went into their last seven matches unpaid but were still able to win five of their six league outings to remain sixth in the National League table.

The wages have been paid at the start of a big week for Blues who are back in the high court on Wednesday due to a winding up petition issued by HMRC.

It is understood staff at Roots Hall are still waiting for their wages, with some of them having not been paid since the end of November.

Southend's players will be due to receive their wages for February on Tuesday.

Ron Martin has not responded to the Echo's request for a comment.
