SOUTHEND United are likely to be without striking duo Rhys Murphy and Jake Hyde at Wrexham this weekend.

Murphy has missed the last eight games with a thigh problem while Hyde – who is on loan with the Shrimpers from Wrexham – has missed the last two games with a hamstring issue.

And Blues boss Kevin Maher confirmed Murphy was closer to making a return than Hyde.

“Murph has joined in a couple of sessions with us and we’ll see how he is,” said Maher.

“Hydey is still not out on the grass with the team yet though.

“He’s been with the physios and hopefully we’ll know more at the start of next week.”

Blues have been boosted by the return of Steve Arnold, Nathan Ralph, Chris Wreh, Dan Mooney and Harry Cardwell in recent weeks.

But Maher will continue to monitor their fitness.

“It’s difficult for everyone to keep going all the time,” said Maher.

“Players who are coming back from injury you have to manage the minutes and make sure they’re up to speed.

“But we are at the stage of the season where you can’t be too picky.

“There’s a balancing act and one we’ll manage it as we go but we need everyone available because it’s a squad game.”

Shot-stopper Arnold returned to the starting line-up against Chesterfield having previously been sidelined since August.

And Maher has confirmed the goalkeeper has come through the match unscathed.

"Arnie didn’t have loads to do which probably helped him but we’re delighted to have him back," said Maher.

"He’s a huge personality around the changing room and the training ground.

"He was our player of the season last year so we’ve missed him greatly.

"We’ve got a really good defensive record this season but having him back is a massive plus for us."
