SOUTHEND United fans made a pre-match presentation to thank Wrexham supporters for their backing at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday.
Back in November, Blues fans launched a GoFundMe page to raise money to help pay the club’s staff and close to a third of the donations came from Wrexham supporters.
Southend fans were keen express their gratitude and a statement from Shrimpers Trust chairman Paul Fitzgerald, on behalf of all Blues fans, explained just why supporters were so grateful.
It read: “Southend United supporters have long possessed a fondness for Wales and the Welsh people.
“Our first two national finals, in the Football League Trophy in 2004 and 2005 were held in Cardiff, one of which resulted in defeat to Wrexham.
“In May 2005, we won the League Two play-off final at the Millennium Stadium and, in April 2006, we earned promotion to the Championship in a fixture away to Swansea City with home fans lining the streets and applauding as we departed the Liberty Stadium.
“But our affinity with Wales has never been stronger than in November 2022 due to the kindness and generosity displayed by the supporters of Wrexham AFC when we launched a GoFundMe initiative to help meet outstanding wage obligations for Southend United staff in the build up to Christmas.
“We were genuinely touched by the contribution of fans from many clubs but it was Wrexham supporters who went above and beyond expectations and who significantly raised the profile of our campaign and the club’s plight.
“Today, we recognise that with a small token of our appreciation by presenting Wrexham AFC fans with a framed message of thanks for your support in our hour of need.
"Although out club still faces many off-field challenges, it is an act for which we are extremely grateful and which we will never forget.”
