JAKE Hyde wants Saturday’s 2-0 triumph at Yeovil Town to be the start of a winning run for Southend United.

The Shrimpers had suffered seven defeats in succession before picking up all three points at Huish Park.

But Hyde, who scored the first goal in the victory, is now targeting a run of a different kind.

“We’ve got a great group of boys here and it’s a group that’s more than capable of going on a winning run like we did earlier on in the season when we were 11 or 12 unbeaten,” said Hyde.

“It’s been a tricky run lately but we’ve got characters in the team and quality too.

“We’ve always been a confident side but sometimes it just takes that one moment to turn it around.

“Now we’ll be looking the other way and look to have a run for the last six games.”

Blues are now ninth in the table, eight points below the play-off positions.

But the 32-year-old is not looking too far ahead.

“Football changes very quickly but we just look at the next game and trying to win that,” said Hyde.

“We’re more than capable of winning those last six games and if we do then we’ll see where it takes us.”

Blues host bottom of the table Maidstone United in their next outing this Friday.

And Kevin Maher’s side will head into the game on a high after winning at Yeovil.

“I think it’s just what we needed,” said Hyde.

“We obviously haven’t been on a fantastic run so the way the boys came out and addressed the game and the intensity we played was just the response we needed.”

And Hyde was also pleased to play a pivotal part in the victory by scoring the Shrimpers’ first goal of the game on his return to the starting line-up.

“I haven’t been available for as many games as I would’ve liked this season but it’s nice to be back out there and nice to be having an impact when you are back out there too,” said Hyde.

“It’s always frustrating when you’re not playing week in, week out because as a footballer that’s all you want to do.

“But I’m feeling good and strong and fingers crossed I can keep it going."
