GUS Scott Morriss feels Southend United have been fighting all season and insists they are not ready to stop just yet.

Ninth placed Blues host Maidstone United at Roots Hall on Friday, sitting eight points below the play-off positions with six games to go.

But, despite admitting the Shrimpers face a tough task to finish in the top seven, Scott-Morriss will not be giving up hope.

“We’ve shown already this season that we can put results together,” said the right wing-back.

“It wasn’t that long ago we won six out of seven so why can’t we go and win the rest of our games?

“It’s an uphill task and I know people will be writing us off saying we can’t make the play-offs.

“But we’ve been fighting all season for different reasons so why not have a strong finish?

“Teams wouldn’t have predicted us to lose seven on the bounce so you never know what’s going to happen.

“We just have to make sure we get our business right and finish the season on a high.”

Scott-Morriss will therefore be seeking three points against already relegated Maidstone on Friday.

And the 25-year-old is focusing purely on Blues.

“Maidstone have got nothing to lose and I’m sure that’s what they will be saying but we can’t worry about them,” said Scott-Morriss.

“We’ll worry about ourselves and we just need to make sure we do the job on Friday and get the three points.

“Then we’ll think about Woking on Monday.”

But the Shrimpers will head into Friday’s game having got back to winning ways after a 2-0 victory at Yeovil Town last time out.

And Scott-Morriss was delighted to see off the Glovers.

“It was massive for us and a big step in the right direction,” said Scott-Morriss.

“It was more of a relief than anything else because we know we’re a good outfit and we’d kind of let ourselves down in recent weeks.

“It was nice to get back to winning ways and hopefully we can build from there.”

And Scott-Morriss is certain Blues will head into Friday’s game with more confidence after winning at Yeovil.

“Everyone has probably got a real spring in their step now but even through the tough times this group has always stayed positive,” said Scott-Morriss.

“We’ve kept each other going but winning does breed confidence and that’s probably something we’ve been missing the last few weeks.

“I don’t think we had been playing poorly but we were probably lacking that bit of confidence to win those games.”

Blues will now be looking to end the season strongly.

But, whatever happens, Scott-Morriss will end the campaign pleased with how he has handled the step up after signing from Hemel Hempstead last summer.

“I couldn’t have wished for a better season really,” said Scott-Morriss.

“Coming into it I was a bit anxious and a little bit nervous stepping up to the level but if you had offered me this amount of games at the start of the season and playing well I’d have bitten your hand off.

“I’d like to get my numbers up and I am a bit disappointed in terms of goals and assists but I’m proud of the season so far.”
