AN early Ruby Sealey goal handed Billericay Town a 1-0 win against Hashtag United reserves in the Essex Women’s Cup final tonight.

Sealey latched onto a long through ball from the impressive Scarlett Williams before firing into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

And Billericay boss James Gibson was delighted with the victory.

“I feel very happy for the players and they thoroughly deserved it,” said Gibson.

“Today was all about putting in a footballing performance.

“It was about dominating the ball and dominating the game.

“It wasn’t just about winning, we wanted to control every moment of the game.

“With 2,000 here watching we had a responsibility to inspire some young people today and that’s what we tried to do.”

Billericay were unable to score a second goal despite creating a number of chances.

But Gibson was pleased to see Town creating opportunities to score.

“I’d like to see the expected goals for this game and I’m not sure if it would be single or double figures because we had a lot of chances,” said Gibson.

“The main thing is we created them and we do play creative attacking football with unpredictably, penetration, pace and power.

“It’s all things that inspire fans and make them fall in love with the club.

“We’re really happy and we can be very excited about the future.”

And Gibson will continue to stick to his principles of play.

“We have a very clear identity who we are,” said Gibson.

“We don’t want to turn up and just chuck it in the box because then no-one comes back after half-time.

“It’s very, very important that we inspire people to come and watch.

“We play some really good football in and out of possession and we want people to come and watch us.

“Those who do love how we play but we want more people to be conscious of who we are and what we do.

“We had 2,000 opportunities here to inspire someone and to attract them to our brilliant club.”

Billericay are also currently sitting seventh in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division during their first season at this level.
