SOUTHEND United will remain ‘in great peril’ until Ron Martin sells the club, according to the Blues’ supporters’ groups.

The Shrimpers were back in the high court yesterday following another winding up petition from HMRC and have been given an additional 56 days to pay off their £250,000 debt.

But the supporters’ groups remain deeply concerned about the future of the National League club.

“Whilst it is a relief that our club has not been ordered to be liquidated, or placed in administration, this is not a cause for celebration,” said a statement.

“The fate of Southend United remains in great peril whilst the current owner, Ron Martin, is at the helm.”

Blues have been in a transfer embargo since September due to money owed to HMRC.

The Shrimpers cannot add to their squad until the transfer restrictions are lifted and boss Kevin Maher is also unable to offer anyone already in his squad a new deal.

And the groups feel this will undo the good work already carried out by Maher and his coaching staff.

“His (Ron Martin) failure to discharge the debt in full – whether due to him lacking the means or the inclination to do so – means the club remains under a transfer and registration embargo imposed by the National League which now looks set to undermine the excellent work undertaken by head coach Kevin Maher and his team into 2023/24,” said the statement, “Further to this, the club’s loyal staff will continue to hold concerns about their short-term financial position.

“Their efforts should be appreciated and recognised by all at this time, and we salute their incredible and unwavering dedication to their jobs.”
