SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher cannot wait to step up his side’s pre-season preparations at Bishop’s Stortford tomorrow.

The Shrimpers were forced to call off friendlies with Canvey Island and Billericay Town due to a lack of players.

But, after a behind closed doors clash with West Ham United on Tuesday, Blues will head to the National League North newcomers this weekend.

And Maher is pleased to finally be focusing on football again amid a troubling time for the club.

“All we want to do is focus on football and get ready for August 5th,” said Maher.

“That’s our priority and we need to build the minutes up now.

“We haven’t had much of a pre-season so far and training has been a bit stop start but we’re getting going now.

“Tomorrow is another good one and it will be a good surface because it always is there.

“It will be a competitive game and we’re looking forward to going there and playing.

“The game will be on.”

And Maher is hoping to see the Shrimpers build on their midweek showing against the Hammers.

“We went to West Ham on Tuesday and it was a great environment to go and play,” said Maher.

“We split it into three lots of 25 minutes and it was good for the players to finally get some minutes under their belts.

“The lads all acquitted themselves very well.”

Maher currently has 14 contracted players in his Shrimpers squad.

But defender Louis Lomas and attacking midfielder Dan Mooney are both suffering with injuries.

“We’ve had a few knocks and bruises,” said Maher.

“Louis Lomas hasn’t been able to do any training and Dan Mooney has had a bit of a calf problem.

“We will have to be mindful of them."

Tomorrow's match kicks off at 12 noon.
