CONFUSION still surrounds whether or not Southend United will be able to host Oldham Athletic on the opening day of the National League season next Saturday.

The Shrimpers are due to take on the Latics at Roots Hall.

But it has yet to be confirmed if the ground will be ready to stage the match.

Fans are gathering at Roots Hall on Sunday to help clean the stadium.

However, a safety certificate has yet to be issued and it is now understood a deadline for that has been set for the close of play on Monday.

Concerned members of the Oldham Athletic Supporters Foundation contacted Mark Ives, the general manager of the National League, for clarification and were told a decision will be made by 5pm on Monday.
