SOUTHEND United will start the National League season at home to Oldham Athletic on Saturday.

The Shrimpers had been sweating on a safety certificate ahead of this weekend's opener.

But Blues have now been given the go-ahead to play the match at Roots Hall.

More than 150 fans were at the Shrimpers' stadium on Sunday to help clean all four stands and the surrounding areas.

And Kevin Maher's side can now kick off the campaign as planned.

A statement from the National League confirmed: "Following consultation with Southend United Football Club and the relevant local authorities, the League can confirm it is satisfied that all safety and operational conditions have been met to allow the fixture between Southend United and Oldham Athletic to take place on Saturday 5 August 2023 at Roots Hall as scheduled."
