SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher must finalise his squad of 16 ahead of this weekend’s National League opener against Oldham Athletic.

The Shrimpers boss is limited on the number of players he can register due to the terms of the club’s embargo which has been in place since in September due to money owed to HMRC.

But it does seem certain club captain Nathan Ralph and left wing-back Jack Bridge will both be able to feature despite not yet signing new contracts.

“They will hopefully be part of it,” said Maher.

“They’ve played pre-season games and shown a desire to want to be at the football club which is commendable to them.

“They’re brilliant characters.”

With Ralph and Bridge included Blues currently have 15 players registered to play, leaving space for one more.

However, Maher did not give much away when asked if the experienced Jason Demetriou would fill the gap vacated by Tom Clifford’s departure.

“We’re going to work things out in terms of who does what,” said Maher.

The Blues boss called upon a number of youngsters throughout pre-season with midfielder Jacob Bland and striker George Pulham among those given minutes to impress.

But, when asked if the teenagers could be added to the first team squad outside the 16, Maher said: “It’s anyone you want up to 16 I believe.

“There are some clarity on the rules I need to look at but we’re allowed up to a maximum of 16.”

Injuries will therefore be a big concern for Blues and Maher will be keeping a close eye on his players where that is concerned.

Defender Louis Lomas did not feature throughout due to a groin issue.

He seems unlikely to play this weekend but Maher hinted that both midfielder Noor Husin and Callum Powell would be available to play despite having missed Blues’ pre-season friendly at Canvey Island.

“Louis has had an ongoing groin problem which has hindered his pre-season,” said Maher.

“It’s something he’s working on but Noor and Powelly have been able to train.

“We’ve had to manage injuries and be careful with when people play or don’t play games.

“Hopefully everyone will be OK.”

Maher will also check on midfielder Dan Mooney who has had a calf problem during pre-season.
