SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher wants the Shrimpers to keep proving people wrong this season.

Blues were tipped for relegation by several pundits due to the club’s off-field issues but have kicked off the campaign with back to back victories.

And Maher - whose side head to Dorking Wanderers tomorrow night - is keen for his small squad to keep on upsetting the odds.

“We spoke before the first game that every predicted table had us at the bottom,” said Maher.

“Who knows how things will pan out but for the players to react the way they have is a huge credit for them and we obviously want to keep it going.

“We’re not looking too far ahead but it should give everyone a lift.”

Blues’ transfer embargo, which has been in place since September, means they can only register 16 players.

And, with defender Louis Lomas currently sidelined with a groin problem, Maher has been able to name just four players on his substitutes bench so far this season.

But Maher is refusing to make excuses.

“We’ve got what we’ve got and have to get on with it,” said Maher.

“We’ll be ready for Tuesday’s game and that’s all we’re thinking about.

“We’ll worry about the future when that comes.

“We’ll be ready to go again and can hopefully get a level of performance that allows us to get a result.

“We went there last year and it was tough.

“It always is there and they cause teams a lot of problems but we’ll be giving it our best.”

And Maher stressed it would not just be the Shrimpers feeling the effects of having to play twice in the space of four days.

“Everyone in the country will say the same about tiredness after games but obviously our situation is slightly different,” said Maher.

“But the tiredness is nowhere near as bad when you’re winning football matches and the lads are in good spirits.”
