SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher praised the response of his players following tonight’s 2-0 win against Eastleigh at Roots Hall.

The Shrimpers recorded a well-deserved victory just two days after being docked 10 points for failing to pay a tax bill.

And Maher felt his side were first class in getting back to winning ways.

“To respond and play how we did after the week we’ve had is testament to the players,” said the Blues head coach.

“I thought they were first class tonight.

“There’s always a doubt but knowing the players and with the chat we had yesterday we know they will always come in and give everything they’ve got.

“I will never doubt the effort and the application they give and added to the quality we think we’ve got you can win games of football.

“I can’t speak highly enough of the players.”

Blues broke the deadlock in the 17th minute with Noor Husin on target for the first time this season.

And Maher is keen to see the midfielder adding more goals to his game.

"Noor has got unbelievable ability and can certainly add goals to his game," said Maher.

"We keep talking to midfielders about getting in the box and adding to their goals tally.

"It was a very good finish from him."

Eight minutes later, the Shrimpers doubled their lead with Harry Cardwell on target for the fourth time in five games.

And Maher is pleased to see the forward flourishing.

"We spoke about getting him beter quality of chances this season," said Maher.

"He fed off scraps a bit last year.

"We’re making sure he’s in and around the six yard box and it was an outstanding goal on the break.

"He finished it well and it shows what a good pre-season has done for him."

Blues have now risen to minus one point and Maher was pleased with how his team learnt from mistakes in their previous two games.

“I thought we managed the game a lot better when in front than we did in the previously,” said Maher.

“We played in the right areas and realised where the space was on the pitch.”

The professional performance was greeted by huge applause from Blues' fans at the final whistle.

And Maher found the support quite emotional.

"I said to Benno (Mark Bentley) and Daz (Darren Currie) when we clapping the fans that it was quite emotional after everything we’ve been through as a club," said Maher.

"The fans have got a football team I think they’re proud of and that’s credit to the players and how they go about their business.

"We’re on the same page and when you have that anything can happen at a football club.

"Once the tide turns and we pick up some momentum hopefully we can take this club where we want to go."
