DAN Mooney is determined to show what he can do with Southend United this season.

The attacking midfielder scored twice last term during an injury hit campaign which saw him drop in and out of the starting line-up.

But Mooney has started three of Blues' last four matches this time around and remains eager to impress.

"I've got to kick on this year," said Mooney.

"Last year coming to the club I obviously didn't fulfill what I thought I can do and what I should be doing.

"It's about getting fit, playing and contributing with goals and assists which I know I can do. I've got a goal already this season and want to build on that now."

Mooney's next chance to shine comes against Kidderminster Harriers at Roots Hall tomorrow.

And the 24-year-old wants to help Blues bounce back from Monday's 2-1 defeat at Bromley.

"It's good to get into another game straight after a loss and we've shown many times before we can bounce back," said Mooney.

"It will be good to get back in front of the home fans who are with us all the way.

"We'll look to get three points on board again."

Blues go into the game sitting bottom of the table having been deducted 10 points for failing to pay off a tax bill before a deadline set by the National League.

And Mooney was frustrated the Shrimpers could not work their way back up to zero against Bromley.

"It's a difficult game going there and the pitch plays a factor but I just don't think we started the game as well as we have started recent games," said Mooney.

"It put us on the back foot but we found our way into the game.

"We conceded a goal that killed us and then conceded again which killed us too.

"But after the second goal went it we dominated the game and we were creating chances.

"We could've taken a draw in the end and that would've been a good point to come away with."

Mooney again featured just behind Harry Cardwell in attack against the Ravens. And he is enjoying lining up in a more central role.

"Cards is a great man to have up front," said Mooney.

"He occupies the centre-halves and it gives me the freedom to try and get in the pockets so I'm enjoying it "I just want to be on the pitch though and wherever the gaffer puts me I'll do my best for the team."

But Mooney is also still working his way back to full fitness after a calf injury in pre-season.

"I'm building the minutes up," said Mooney.

"Pre-season was a bit of a crazy one for everyone but I had a niggle as well and it was hard to get going.

"I'm still a bit behind but I feel good and I want to kick on."

And Mooney is also happy to do that with Blues "I've always been happy here," said Mooney.

"Obviously there are ongoing issues off the field and there are things going on we can't control. But the lads, the staff and the fans make it a really good place to be. Once things sort themselves out it will be an even better place to be.

"My thing is I just want to football and that's all I ever wanted to do."
