SOUTHEND United head coach Kevin Maher wants the Shrimpers to mix up their play.

Blues have gifted goals to their opponents with poor passes close to their own penalty area in two of their last four games.

And Maher is keen for side to vary things up.

“We’re at our best when we mix it up,” said the Shrimpers chief.

“It’s about choosing the right pass at the right time.

“If you have to put your foot through it then that’s what you do.

“We want to play out from the back at the right time but if teams are coming after you the space might be in other areas and we need to recognise that.”

The Shrimpers gifted the lead to Bromley on Monday when a poor backpass from Harry Taylor was latched onto by Louis Dennis who fired the hosts in front.

But Maher was pleased with how Taylor reacted to his error.

“People will make mistakes but I don’t want them to go into their shell because of it,” said Maher.

“We talk about Harry and he’s been outstanding this season.

“He played ever so well in the second half on Monday too but as a team we’ve got to eradicate those bits and pieces and be more consistent.

“A lot of the goals we’ve conceded are avoidable and no-one has really opened us up.”

Blues will now take that into Saturday’s match with Kidderminster Harriers at Roots Hall.

And Maher expects Harriers to be hard to break down.

“They’ll be tough opponents, “said Maher.

“They’ve come up a level and they’re hard to break down.

“They’re physically quite strong and it will be a stern test.

“They got a decent point at home on Monday and I watched them on Saturday.

“It was a difficult one after they had a man sent off and it’s a difficult one for us.
