SOUTHEND United will be looking to breach the best defence in the National League tomorrow.

Halifax Town have conceded just five goals in seven games this season.

And Blues boss Kevin Maher knows Chris Millington’s team will be tough to beat tomorrow.

“We’ll be ready but it’s a tough one,” said Maher.

“They’re unbeaten in five and they’re tough to score against too.

“They haven’t scored loads themselves but they have dangerous players in attacking areas.

“They’re tough to play against and going away to any team in this league is always tough.

“We’ll have to get our levels and our performance right and get a result.”

However, the Shrimpers will be heading to the Shay Stadium on a high after Saturday’s 2-1 victory against Kidderminster which was secured via a last gasp strike from Callum Powell.

“Last minute winners should give you confidence and it’s been a good week of preparation,” said Maher.

“It’s obviously been a hot week but we’ve managed it the best we can.

“Training has been good and we’ve prepared as normal for another tough test away from home.

“But we’ve got to go and try and get a result there.”

Halifax currently sit sixth in the National League standings while Blues remain at the foot of the table after being docked 10 points for financial irregularities.

Had the Shrimpers not had the deduction they would be level on points with their hosts this weekend in a match which kicks off at 12.30pm.

But Maher does not expect an earlier start to have any impact on the game.

“I’ll tell you at 2.30 if it made difference,” joked Maher.

“With regards to the weather it might even help a little bit starting earlier because it won’t be quite as hot but it shouldn’t be a problem.

“I know it’s an earlier start for fans travelling up but for us we just have to get on with it.”

However, the Shrimpers will again be without defender Louis Lomas this weekend.

“He’s still with the physios jogging,” said Maher.

“He’s still quite a way off. “
