LIFELONG Southend United fans are celebrated after being given renewed hope and optimism over the future of the club.

On Thursday night, Southend Council voted in favour of a motion calling for the council to offer financial support – which could see the council invest £4.5million to help buy Roots Hall.

Southend United chairman Ron Martin has previously said he will sell his entire shareholding at the Shrimpers for just £1 – but it will cost £4.5million to buy Roots Hall.

It comes as Mr Martin prepares for another High Court hearing on October 4 over unpaid HMRC debts.

Now, loyal Blues fans are feeling confident this could help save the club – even if only in the short-term.

David Matthews, 68, a Blues fan for 53 years, said: “This is very positive and potentially doable.

“If a body, like the Shrimpers Trust, are supported at least in the medium term by a council investment, then Southend can be saved.

“But time is of the essence here. Nobody trusts, nor do I believe, Ron Martin will have found a buyer or paid up by the next court hearing.

“Therefore, action needs to happen now.”

At the last court hearing, last month, it was revealed an Australian man is in talks to buy the club, however there has been no announcement since.

Fan, Terry Edwards, 52, added: “I watched the meeting live last night. It was heartening hearing the support from the council members.

“I had previously had a feeling whether fair or not that the council had no interest in Southend United.

“So, I was surprised that one member was a season ticket holder and others went to games.

“Southend Council getting involved in the fight to save the club is a huge plus point and makes me feel a bit more confident that he club will be rescued and we can move on to better times.”

Michael Croft, 51, said: “I was very happy that the meeting took place last night for the city of Southend as we need to protect our club.

“I thought it was very interesting and the council said some very positive things. I really hope they step in.

“We must continue putting pressure on Ron Martin in selling the club.”
