A CLEARLY hurting Kevin Maher spoke of his pride for Southend United’s players and fans following his side’s 3-0 defeat at York City.

Blues had Harry Taylor and Gus Scott-Morriss sent off during a depressing afternoon which again showed the seriousness of the club’s situation.

But Maher heaped praise on those around him before stressing the need for help.

"I’m proud of the players and proud of the fans for how they supported the team at the end there and how they support this club," said Maher.

"But there’s so much out of control and all we can do is our best.

"We need help and something’s got to change because we can’t do anything about it.

“We fight every day for the football club as staff and players but other people need to step up and do what’s right for the club."

The Shrimpers have been hit by a number of off-field issues and sit bottom of the National League table after being docked 10 points for financial irregularities.

Maher has also been unable to add to his squad for 12 months due to a transfer embargo and could only name three substitutes against York on Saturday.

But the Blues boss delighted with those who were available.

"The players have been unbelievable,” said Maher.

"I’m proud of how the players played here too, I thought they were outstanding.

"York only really got into our half once in the first half and had one shot from 25 yards or whatever it was that flew in the top corner.

“We were in total control of the game and were playing ever so well.

“We just needed a goal.”
