SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher has added to his squad for the first time in 12 months.

The Shrimpers have been in a transfer embargo since last September due to money owed to HMRC.

But Maher was granted permission to add to his squad on a temporary basis to ensure Tuesday night’s game with Maidenhead United could go ahead.

And the Blues chief was pleased to be able to bring in goalkeeper David Martin and midfielder Mauro Vilhete.

“I can’t tell you what a good person David Martin is and what a really goalkeeper coach he’s been for us since he’s come in and done that role,” said Maher.

“He’s still good enough to play and I think that was the conundrum in his head when he came to us.

“We’re just grateful to have someone of his calibre.

“He’s experienced and you can tell.

“I think it definitely helps the lads at the back.”

Martin started Tuesday night’s match while Vilhete came off the bench to replace Dan Mooney late on.

And Maher is happy to have the midfielder on board.

“He's someone who is known to us at the football club and we always felt that was important if we were going to bring someone in,” said Maher.

“His little cameo at the end was brilliant and he’s someone who knows the game.

“He’s a good footballer.”
