OLLIE Kensdale says Southend United’s point at Rochdale will be the best they pick up this season.

The Shrimpers fought back from two goals to draw 2-2 at Spotland on Saturday.

And Kensdale felt it was a good result against strong opposition.

“Credit to them, they're a good team and I don't think we'll get a better point this season to be honest,” said the centre-back.

“It sums the boys up and the management team we've got as well coming back like we did.

“It was a tricky start.

“They came out the blocks quickly and we weren't probably as quick as we would've liked to be.”

But Blues reacted well to going two goals behind and soon got back in the game with Harry Cardwell heading home his first goal of the game.

“We got the goal back straight away and I said to the boys on the pitch get in at 2-1 and we're still in the game,” said Kensdale.

“We tweaked a few things at half-time and it made a big difference.”

And Kensdale was encouraged to see the Shrimpers avoid defeat when not at their best.

“You have 46 games in a season and you're not always going to play well,” said the defender.

“Getting a point when you're not at your best is a sign of a good team.”

Blues bagged a point thanks to a second half equaliser from Cardwell.

And Kensdale was quick to praise the striker’s performance.

“We all know how big he is for us,” said Kensdale.

“He probably hasn't really had the run of games he's wanted before and having a bit-part pre-season has helped him massively.

“But confidence in football is a massive thing and we know if we find him in the box the ball will end up in the back of the net.

“Having him up top we always feel like we're in the game even at 2-0 down.”

The share of the spoils kept Blues – who have been deducted 10 points for financial irregularities – off the foot of the National League table.

And Kensdale insists the Shrimpers will continue to give their all in testing times.

“It’s not ideal and at this football club you face a lot of challenges you wouldn’t get elsewhere,” said Kensale.

“It’s part of the beauty of football and the players we’ve got and the gaffer who has put it together are a tight knit group.

“It’s a hectic period but there’s nothing better than playing football and if we win on Tuesday it makes this point even better.”
