LONG-SUFFERING Southend United boss Kevin Maher is excited for the club's future after a deal to sell the Shrimpers was confirmed.

Justin Rees and a consortium made up of local businessman have agreed terms with current chairman Ron Martin, subject to due diligence being completed.

And Maher - who has guided Blues through an incredibly difficult period - believes it is fantastic news for the football club.

“It doesn’t need me say what tomorrow (High Court hearing) could have been but the news of Justin and the consortium coming in is brilliant,” said Maher.

“This news is brilliant and hopefully it will galvanise everyone.

“There have been a lot of years when it’s been difficult for fans and everyone connected with the club.

“Hopefully tonight is the first step along the way and we feel the club is ready to take off in a lot of areas.”

Maher took charge of the Shrimpers back in October 2021 having previously made more than 450 appearances for the club as a player.

However, the 46-year-old has endured a number of difficulties since being appointed and has been restricted by a transfer embargo for the past 12 months.

That has reduced his squad size to 16 registered players while the club were also docked 10 points after failing to pay off their HMRC debt before a deadline set by the National League.

Despite that Maher has helped Blues produce a number of fine performances this season.

And he is now looking forward to being able to carry out his job without constantly being hindered.

“All we want is to work off a level playing field and be able to do our jobs properly,” said Maher.

“We’ve got brilliant people in the building and hopefully John Still can get to work with the scouts we have going up and down the country watching players again now.

“But right throughout the club it will be boost everyone and give them a spring in their step.”

Blues added to the excitement around the club by beating Oxford City 2-0 at Roots Hall tonight.

And Maher was left in awe by the noise generated by fans after the final whistle.

“It was unbelievable and we could have stayed there all night listening to them to be fair,” said Maher.

“We’re grateful to the support they’ve given us all the way through, not just tonight.

“My kids are here as well so for them to hear it is brilliant.

“Hopefully there’s many more nights like this to come.”

That certainly seems more likely with Rees at the helm.

And Maher is certain the Australian will make a big impact.

“He will bring a lot of energy and positivity to the club,” said Maher.

“We need that and someone to get hold of the club and take it forward.

“I think he’s going to be a breath of fresh air.”
