SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher believes new loan signing Daniel Kanu will be ready to hit the ground running with Blues.

Kanu has joined the Shrimpers from Charlton Athletic.

And Maher is thrilled to have the 18-year-old in his squad for Saturday’s match at Woking.

“I’m delighted to have Daniel on board,” said Maher.

“He’s scored a lot of goals throughout his young career, been in the first team at Charlton and scored so he’s one we’re looking forward to working with.

“He’s got a lot of good attributes too.

“He’s got pace, wants to be on the shoulder of defenders and he knows where the net is as well.”

Blues were allowed to bring in Kanu, despite still being in a transfer embargo, due to a serious knee injured suffered by Callum Powell.

And Maher feels Kanu is exactly what the Shrimpers needed.

“It’s an area we needed a body in and he’s ready to go,” said Maher.

“He played on Monday for Charlton’s under 21s and scored a hat-trick so he’s in a good place.

“Hopefully he’ll come in and hit the ground running.”

Kanu’s fine form meant he attracted interest from elsewhere.

But the forward opted to sign for the Shrimpers.

“He wanted to come here as well, despite interest at other clubs,” said Maher.

“He’s seen where we’re at the other night with the news (about the sale of the club) and the atmosphere, so he knows where the club can be.

“I think he sees it as a good place for him (to learn)

"It’s a good fit for both.”
