SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher says he nearly had to select an outfield player in goal at Woking this afternoon.
Blues have signed Nick Hayes on loan from Ipswich Town to replace the injured David Martin between sticks this afternoon.
But the Shrimpers came close to not having a recognised goalkeeper available.
“David Martin has a tight hamstring off the back on Tuesday and he pulled out yesterday so we’re grateful to Ipswich,” said Maher.
“It was touch and go and we nearly had to put an outfield player in goal.
“There are a lot of hoops we have to jump through before getting players in.”
The Shrimpers remain in a transfer embargo which is likely to remain in place until the first few weeks of November.
