SOUTHEND United wing-back Gus Scott-Morriss is pleased to be banishing his biggest weakness of last season.

The right wing-back went the whole of the previous campaign without a single assist to his name.

But, this time around, Scott-Morriss has already made five goals in 13 games.

And he was delighted to add to that tally by setting up Harry Cardwell to score the Shrimpers’ first goal in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Woking.

“I knew it was a weakness of mine last year and I was very disappointed with the assists,” said Scott-Morriss.

“I’ve tried really hard to make sure I’m putting in quality deliveries this season and getting my volume of crosses up too.

“I’m really happy with how it’s going and to get another one on Saturday.”

Scott-Morriss is now top of the assists charts, alongside Jack Bridge, for the Shrimpers.

And the 26-year-old is delighted to have the in-form Cardwell to aim for in the area.

“It works both ways,” said Scott-Morriss.

“He knows the ball is coming into the box and we know he’s going to go and attack it.

“He wants that supply and it’s the perfect striker to have.”

But Scott-Morriss was not just making goals at the weekend as he also headed home his second goal of the season.

And the goal came after plenty of hard work from the Shrimpers on the training ground.

“Daz (Darren Currie) does all our attacking set pieces and he saw something in their defensive structure so we had worked on it through the week,” said Scott-Morriss.

“It worked perfectly too.

“Cards was to head it at goal or into the danger zone which he did but I’m not sure how I got my head on it.

“I just saw it went in the goal so happy days!”

The well-taken header made sure of all three points for the Shrimpers.

And Scott-Morriss was delighted to pick up all three points at the end of a hectic schedule which has seen Blues play seven games in the space of just 22 days.

“It’s been a long run of Saturday Tuesdays and they asked you questions when you come here,” said Scott-Morriss.

“They stick it on you, it’s a physical battle and you have to head a lot of balls out your box.

“Today the gaffer told us to be good in both boxes and we were.

“We defended well and did the damage when we needed to at the other end as well which was perfect.”

But Scott-Morriss is keen to keep the good run going and add to a feel-good factor boosted by news Justin Rees and his consortium have agreed terms to buy the club.

“We want to get on an unbeaten run now but there’s a long way to go,” said Scott-Morriss.

“It’s been nice having positive news going into a game and you can feel it n the stadium.

“It’s going to take a little bit of time but we know it’s on the up now.”
