SOUTHEND United striker Harry Cardwell insists he will not get carried away by his stunning start to the season.

Cardwell has already made the current campaign his best ever in front of goal after hitting the back of the net 11 times in 15 games.

But the forward is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

“To be hitting the back of the net frequently is good but it’s just the start and there’s a long way to go this season still,” said Cardwell.

“I want to keep it going and keep on helping the team to pick up more points.”

Cardwell’s latest goal came in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Woking as he headed home a fine right wing cross from Gus Scott-Morriss.

And Cardwell was quick to praise the part played by his team-mates.

“I’m lucky to play with some of the players I play with and the system we play is perfect for a centre forward too,” said Cardwell.

“We play down the channels and get into good areas to get crosses into the box.

“The gaffer has made it clear to all of us that once we get in those positions I’ve got to be in the right area to put it in the back of the net and that’s what I’ve got to keep on doing.”

Cardwell’s start to the season is the most prolific made by a Shrimpers player since Micky Beesley back in 1962.

And he was delighted his latest effort helped Blues beat Woking at the weekend.

“We always know going to Woking is tough and it was a great win,” said Cardwell.

“We know what they’re going to throw at us and the manager made us aware they were going to put it on us and ask questions.

“ They make you defend your own box but we did that well and that’s another side to our game we’ve shown this season. We’re hard to beat and we were delighted to get the clean sheet along with two well-worked goals to get the three points.”

Blues will now be looking to build on the win when they head to Yeovil Town in the FA Cup this weekend.
