A DEPLETED Southend United suffered FA Cup disappointment at Yeovil Town this afternoon.

The Shrimpers included youth team duo Beau MacDonald and Ronnie Blake and a far from fully fit Nathan Ralph in their squad to take it up to 14.

But the Glovers gleefully took full advantage by winning the fourth round qualifying tie 2-0 at Huish Park.

Yeovil – who top National League South – opened the scoring after just two minutes when a Jordan Young free-kick from out wide on the right flank was headed out into the path of Jake Wannell in the left hand side of the penalty area.

And the defender sent an assured low left foot shot into the bottom left hand corner of the net.

Moments later, Will Dawes wasted a good opportunity to make it 2-0 as he blasted over the crossbar from 20 yards but Blues soon replied with Jason Demetriou firing wide of the left post from long range.

Shrimpers midfielder Wes Fonguck then sent a curling effort straight at Joe Day before the Yeovil shot-stopper parried away a low shot from Jack Bridge.

With Blues still looking for an equaliser, Jack Wood saw an effort deflected wide of the left post by Yeovil defender Michael Smith before Dan Mooney fired inches wide of the same upright from 20 yards.

However Mooney was soon forced off injured in the 42nd minute and was replaced in the centre of the park by youth team midfielder MacDonald who turned 16 in July.

Following the change, Jack Wood sent a long range shot straight at Day at the start of the second half before MacDonald saw an effort blocked following a half cleared Oli Coker free-kick.

After surviving the scares, Yeovil had shouts for a penalty waved away when Rhys Murphy went to ground following a slight push from Jason Demetriou but referee James Durkin opted to wave play on.

Play immediately switched back to the other end of the field with Fonguck seeing a shot deflected wide of the left post when well placed inside the penalty area.

But Yeovil stood strong and doubled their lead in the 67th minute when the impressive Young showed quick feet before poking the ball home from close range.

The Shrimpers also handed youngster Blake his first team debut late on but Kevin Maher's side never looked like scoring as they fell at the first hurdle of the FA Cup for the second season in succession.
