SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher was left ruing his side's wasted opportunities following Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Altrincham.

Shrimpers striker Harry Cardwell missed two good chances to score before Justin Amaluzor put the hosts in front just before the hour mark.

And Maher felt the first goal of the game proved pivotal.

"The first goal was always going to be very important," said Maher.

“We had two or three very good chances and they’ve had one or two as well to be fair.

“But it was important for someone to take one of those chances."

Blues were unable to make the most of the opportunities coming their way and Maher expected an unmarked Cardwell to convert a left wing cross from Jack Bridge in the first half.

“Cards has got some unbelievable headers this season and you’re waiting for it to nestle in the net but it just went the wrong side of the post," said Maher.

"On another day he scores and we're in front."

But Blues - who went into the game unbeaten in their last seven league outings - ultimately returned home empty handed.

And Maher admitted his side were not at their best despite being on top early on.

"We started ever so well but then just dropped off a little bit," said Maher.

"We were half a yard off second balls and if you pick them up you’re on the front foot.

“We were disappointed in the second half to go one behind but we got ourselves back in the game.

“We were dominant for a good period but you need a chance to go in or for the ball to drop to get back level.

“We were gambling towards the end and throwing people forward but you’re always susceptible to conceding another when that happens.”

Blues now sit 16th in the National League standings.

And Maher was frustrated not to have taken something from the game.

“You can’t play well every game and you’ve got to grind results out,” said Maher.

“One or two were a bit off that today and it’s disappointing not to get something from it.

“There wasn’t loads in the game though and we needed to take our chances.”

However, Blues were again only able to select just three substitutes against Altrincham.

And Maher again reiterated how his small squad remains in need of help.

“We’re obviously short and you can see we need one or two bodies just to help,” said Maher.

“When the likes of Cav (Miley) and Harry Taylor are out, they’re big losses even though the ones coming in did well.

“You need a squad so you can cope with injuries and suspensions.
