SOUTHEND United wing-back Gus Scott-Morriss thought the Shrimpers lacked the quality needed to win at Altrincham on Saturday.

Blues slumped to a 2-0 defeat at the J Davidson Stadium.

And Scott-Morriss was frustrated to head home empty handed.

“We’re disappointed,” said Scott-Morriss.

“We huffed and puffed but probably didn’t show enough quality to get the win.

“Saying that, whoever took the first chance on a difficult pitch, was probably going to win the game.

“We had chances but so did they and unfortunately they took theirs and we didn’t.”

But Scott-Morriss felt there was very little between the two in-form teams.

“It was a very even game throughout and I don’t think anyone really took control of it,” said Scott-Morriss.

“Both teams had spells in both halves and we had chances to go and put the ball in the back of the net, we just didn’t do it.”

However, the state of the pitch did not help either team.

“I don’t like to make excuses but it was a difficult pitch to come back on to, especially on the right hand side where it was very soggy and wet,” said Scott-Morriss.

“We have adapt to it but watching it as a neutral it probably wasn’t the best spectacle and we’re disappointed we haven’t picked up any points.”

But Scott-Morriss will not be delving too deeply into the defeat.

“It's football sometimes,” said the 26-year-old.

“You can over-analyse it and pick the bones out of it but the thing is they took their chances today and we didn’t.

“It’s as simple as it comes but it’s frustrating to say that.”

However, Scott-Morriss is remaining upbeat.

“We’ve got a large chunk of the season left and we’re in sight of the play-offs which was our aim,” said Scott-Morriss.

We didn’t want to be scrapping at the bottom of the table with everything that’s gone on and we’re in a good position.

“We’re disappointed not to continue the run but it’s not all doom and gloom.”

And Scott-Morriss is already looking forward to facing table-topping Chesterfield at Roots Hall this weekend.

“We’re on a difficult run but bring it on,” said Scott-Morriss.

“We’ve got nothing to lose and we’ve said that every week so who knows. “
