GATESHEAD interim boss Rob Elliot felt his side deserved more than a point against Southend United on Saturday.

A second half equaliser from Shrimpers striker Harry Cardwell meant the game at the Gateshead International Stadium ended in a 1-1 draw.

But Elliot thought Gateshead had more than enough opportunities to have picked up all three points.

“I thought we completely dominated the game and limited them to very few chances,” Elliot told the club’s website.

“It was a brilliant performance after what’s been a tough week physically and mentally.

“I’m really pleased but obviously gutted not to get three points because I felt we deserved them.

“I couldn’t ask for any more from the boys aside from being a bit more clinical but it is a good platform for us to keep building on.”

And Elliot also had words of praise for Blues goalkeeper David Martin.

“Their keeper has made a couple of brilliant saves,” said Elliot.

“I think even one when Jordan (Hunter) has hit the post but we have to use this as fuel to make sure than when we’re in this position again we come away with three points.”

The share of the spoils kept Gateshead fifth in the table.
