SOUTHEND United defender Ollie Kensdale was a cut above the rest on an eventful 100th game for the Shrimpers on Saturday.

Kensdale scored his first goal of the season as Blues fought back to beat 10 man Aldershot Town 4-1 at Roots Hall.

And not even a nasty looking facial injury which forced the defender off late on could ruin his memorable afternoon.

“I’m proud and it’s a massive club so it’s great to get to 100 appearances,” said Kensdale.

“We worked it out that I’d been available for about 110 so it’s really good and I’m delighted to score as well.

“I just thought I’d stay up there.

“It was a second phase move really and I didn’t think it would get to me because Cards (Harry Cardwell) was in a better position.

“The defender got sucked in and I’m quite glad it happened quickly otherwise I’d have got a nose bleed being that high up rather than the one I literally got at the end.”

Kensdale still had blood dripping from a cut just below his right eye while conducting his after-match interview.

But the 23-year-old insisted he felt fine.

“It’s alright and it probably looks worse than it actually is,” said Kensdale.

“I’ll go to hospital and get it stitched up and it will be alright.

“It was a bit of a whack but I wanted to stay on.

“I was saying to John (Gowens)I couldn’t come off because I’ve played every minute so far.

“But had I played on and been groggy they could have scored so it was the right decision.

“I feel fine though and hopefully I’ll be good to go on Tuesday.”

Blues will head into Tuesday's clash with Altrincham on a high having won their last two games.

And Kensdale was delighted with the spirit on show as Kevin Maher’s side battled their way to victory.

“It’s always nice to come back from 1-0 down but you don’t want to rely on it because it won’t always happen,” said Kensdale.

“It shows the character in the group but I think a result like this has been coming.

“The red card helped but we’ve created chances during the sticky run and, after scoring at Maidenhead, the pressure was off a bit.

“But we’ve scored loads of goals at home this season.”

Aldershot led 1-0 before having Rollin Meyanese sent off four minutes into the second half for a foul on Blues striker Danny Waldron.

The victory moved the Shrimpers 16th in the table, three points above the drop zone.
