SOUTHEND United midfielder Wes Fonguck is keen to keep on taking his chance – in more ways than one.

After making eight starts in succession, Fonguck dropped to the bench for two of the Shrimpers’ last five matches.

But he scored the winning goal on his return to the starting line-up against Altrincham on Tuesday and remains determined to keep on making a positive impact in the centre of the park.

“We’ve got new players now and the competition is there,” said Fonguck.

“It’s the pros and cons of football because you need a squad.

“When you get a chance you’ve got to take it to stay in the team so it’s nice to score.”

Fonguck’s goal, which was his third of the season so far, came just before the break at Roots Hall.

And he was delighted to work his way back onto the score-sheet for the first time since September.

“I’m happy to get a goal,” said Fonguck.

“We talk a lot about midfielders getting into the box and we’re pleased to see it pay off.

“It feel good.

“We’ve been on a good run recently and it’s nice to carry that on with a third win.

“I’m pleased to get another goal too because I do want to get more.”

Blues’ victory saw them move 13th in the National League standings.

But Kevin Maher’s side had to come from behind to pick up all three points after Chris Conn-Clarke fired the visitors into an early lead.

“We have a style of play and these things can happen,” said Fonguck.

“It was good to see we bounced back though and took the lead in the first half.”

Blues will now be looking to continue the good run of results when they head to sixth placed Oldham Athletic on Saturday.

And Fonguck is pleased the Shrimpers will visit Boundary Park having worked their way further away from the bottom four “We’re not silly and it didn’t look nice,” said Fonguck.

“We were lower than we wanted to be but these results push us up.

“We take it one step at a time but of course you want to be winning.”
